PLUMBAGO

PLUMBAGO

Based on sculptural works originally created using colored pencil cores, I am reconstructing the designs so they can be used in everyday life. The forms are digitally edited using Fusion, and produced with a 3D printer. (Print support: SOLIZE Corporation)

I have been creating sculptural works using colored pencil cores. They take the form of rings and can be worn, but they are extremely fragile and can easily break when pressure is applied. In addition, each piece requires a significant amount of time to complete. I have been searching for a way to truly place the forms I create into someone else's hands.

Just as novels and newspapers are printed on paper to convey information and stories, I began to wonder whether it might not be unnatural for forms originally created from pencil cores to be reproduced with a 3D printer and placed into someone’s hands.

I have decided to call this series of works “PLUMBAGO.” “Plumbago” refers to graphite. In the early history of pencils, it was mined from the earth, cut into shape, and used as the core material. The word graphite is derived from the Greek graphein, meaning “to write.” (From The Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance by Henry Petroski)
